A p-chart is an attributes control chart used with data collected in subgroups of varying sizes. Because the subgroup size can vary, it shows a proportion on nonconforming items rather than the actual count. These four charts are the p-chart, the np-chart, the c-chart, and the u-chart. The question addressed in this column is when to use these and other specialty charts with your count-based data. The question addressed in this column is when to use these and other specialty charts with your count-based data. Use P Chart to monitor the proportion of defective items where each item can be classified into one of two categories, such as pass or fail. Use this control chart to monitor process stability over time so that you can identify and correct instabilities in a process. The p chart is one of four attribute control charts used to evaluate the stability of a process over time using counted data. p charts are sometimes confused with u charts. Defective Items - p charts Each item is only counted once: The p control chart is used to determine if the fraction of defective items in a group of items is consistent over time. A product or service is defective if it fails to conform to specifications or a standard in some respect. P charts are used to monitor the proportion of nonconforming units of a process based on samples taken from the process at given times (hours, shifts, days, weeks, months, etc.). Typically, an initial series of samples is used to estimate proportion nonconforming of a process. Xbar-Range Charts. Another commonly used control chart for continuous data is the Xbar and range (Xbar-R) chart (Figure 8). Like the I-MR chart, it is comprised of two charts used in tandem. The Xbar-R chart is used when you can rationally collect measurements in subgroups of between two and 10 observations.

Walther A. Shewhart, who founded SPC, described two types of variation, chance cause For proportion (or percent) harmed patients we use a P chart.

of defect products in a production line, we can use either p-charts or c-charts. p -charts display the fraction of outcomes of a process which do not, or do obey  A p-chart is a type of control chart used to monitor the proportion of nonconforming units when measuring subgroups at regular intervals from a process. 16 Jan 2019 12 What is np Chart: When each data point is based on the same sample size, a special version of the p chart can be used. The np chart is for the
